Jet Lag Glasses: How to Beat Jet Lag Faster by Timing Light (2026 Guide)

Jet lag happens because your body clock is still on home time while the sun says something else. The fastest way to shift your clock is not melatonin pills or willpower — it's controlling when light reaches your eyes. Here's how to use light, darkness and jet lag glasses to adjust faster, whether you're flying east or west.

Quick answer

Seek bright light at the times that push your clock toward the new time zone, and block light at the times that would push it the wrong way. Amber or Red glasses make the "block" part easy on planes, in airports and in hotel rooms.

Why light beats jet lag

Your master clock is reset mainly by light reaching melanopsin cells in the retina. Light in your biological morning moves your clock earlier; light in your biological evening and night moves it later. The timing is relative to your body clock, not to the local time — which is why getting light at the wrong moment can make jet lag worse. We cover the cell biology in ipRGC Subtypes, Signalling Pathways, and Implications for Photobiological Eyewear Design (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.19500137).

Circadian researchers (for example Eastman & Burgess, Sleep Medicine Clinics, 2009) have shown that timed light and timed darkness can shift the body clock substantially faster than doing nothing.

Flying east (e.g. US to Europe)

You need to move your clock earlier.

  • Get: morning daylight at your destination once your body clock is ready for it (usually from day two or three).
  • Avoid: bright light in your destination evening, and very early morning light on the first day if it falls in your biological night.
  • Wear: Amber in the evening at your destination; Red in the hotel before sleep.

Flying west (e.g. Europe to the US)

You need to move your clock later. This is usually easier.

  • Get: afternoon and early-evening daylight at your destination.
  • Avoid: early-morning light for the first couple of days if you wake too early.
  • Wear: Amber if you wake at dawn and want to stay drowsy; Red in the last hour before bed.

On the plane

  1. Set your watch to destination time as soon as you board.
  2. If it's night at your destination, wear Amber or Red while you use the seat screen or your phone, then sleep with an eye mask.
  3. If it's day at your destination, keep the window shade open and avoid blocking lenses.

Our Red lens measures zero transmission from 380 to 560 nm, inspired by our patented Circadian560 research: Circadian560 Spectral Engineering (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.19594265).

More jet lag tips

  • Shift a little before you fly: move bedtime 30–60 minutes toward the destination for 2–3 nights.
  • Eat on local time from day one.
  • Short naps only (20–30 minutes) on arrival day.
  • Caffeine in the local morning, not the afternoon.
  • Melatonin: some people use it; ask your doctor about timing and whether it suits you.

FAQ

Do blue light glasses help with jet lag?
Strongly tinted amber or red glasses help you avoid light at the wrong time, which is half of shifting your body clock. Pair them with bright light at the right time.

How long does jet lag last?
Roughly a day per time zone without any strategy. Well-timed light and darkness can shorten it.

Is jet lag worse flying east or west?
Usually east, because your clock has to move earlier, which it resists more.

Should I wear sleep glasses on the plane?
Yes, if it is night at your destination and you're using screens or cabin lights are on.
